![]() He demonstrates Charlie's technique on the video. Kenny, a relative of Charlie, has spent years promoting and keeping alive the memory of Charlie. David Holt interviewed Kinney Rorrer and the video is on youtube. By the way, classic banjo and OT three finger are essentially taken from the 19th century parlor guitar stye. Joseph Weidlich's "Old Time Southern Banjo Styles" has tabs on Charlie's style, but as Charlie, as mentioned, rarely was recorded soloing or playing lead, they are examples of basic classic banjo the reason for there not being a tab book just on Charlie has to do with the fact that he didn't record songs or tunes in which he plays anything other than back-up. Mike explains what Charlie is doing and provides a sample, "White House Blues", in which he backs up Kirk Sutpin and Greg Hooven. Apparently, while Charlie could play solo and lead, the recording companies weren't interested on recording him doing it. ![]() Primarily we are left with recordings in which he plays back-up, in the three finger classic style. Charlie could play solos in the classic style and there are a few (very few) that were recorded. Mike Seeger's DVD on "Old time Banjo Styles" touches on Poole's technique. I thought (I am pretty new to this) that when playing clawhammer that most people don't play chord shapes and just lay down there fingers were needed for each passage (at least I was told this when I was looking around for chord charts for different tunings) and that 2 & 3 finger playing would require knowledge of, and be based on chords. I have a question about clawhammer vs 2 & 3 finger. I've been banjoless for a quite a while and should have one arriving by the end of next week and will be digging into Chris's videos. I used to have that OTH issue and I am already a big fan of banjo Chris. Art Rosenbaum's books and the many video tutorials (think /user/banjochris ) kind of cover what most folks need to know to start playing in these styles.if you can CH, you can 2 & 3 finger pick pretty easy without the need to have a song tabbed out in its entirety in my opinion.this article from the Old Time Herald might help you get started out though.Poole's style was influenced by chordal jazz players, so think in those terms and you'll pick it up pretty fast.
